Electrum is a lightwight, free and open-source Bitcoin software wallet focuses on speed and simplicity. It provides a nice interface that broadcasts all your transaction details instantly. Unlike Bitcoin Core client ( which requires downloading a lot of GB data with Bitcoin blockchain ), Electrum doesn't need to download any additional data  because it connects to external servers and is ready for use immediately after launch. Electrum is available on Linux, Windows, OSX and Android.

Creating and using Electrum wallet in Windows is very easy:
Visit electrum.org ( make sure the connection is secure which you can confirm by paying attention to the URL ).
Choose which version you want to use and Windows platform. This tutorial is about creating a wallet in Windows with "Portable" version of software, but steps of creating Electrum wallet for "Executable" and "Installer" versions are similar. Click “Portable Version” this will download file to your computer.

Run the downloaded file and you will see the screen as below. This launches Electrum Wallet Creating Wizard. Its first question regards your method of connecting to a server. Choose "Auto connect" ( letting Electrum decide on a server is a good beginner option ) and click Next.

The next screen prompts you to name your new Electrum Wallet file with the text “This file does not exist.” The Wizard offers the default name default_wallet. Accept it, then click Next.

The next screen offers a choice of four types of Electrum Wallet, with the default set to “Standard wallet.” Leave this option selected then click Next.

The next screen asks about the kind of keystore to create. A keystore is the set of signing keys you’ll use to make Bitcoin transactions, and is controlled by a seed. Leave the default option “Create a new seed” selected and click Next.

The next window displays your seed. Electrum will generate your wallet backup seed – a sequence of 12 words, which allows you to restore your wallet if something unforseen happens to your device. You MUST keep the backup seed secure, as you would keep your bank login credentials. Also, we recommend printing the sequence or writing it down by hand, and storing it safely.

To make sure that you wrote down the backup seed correctly, the next window asks you to type your seed. Click inside the text area and type the words of your seed. When you have entered the correct words, the Next button will become active. Click it.

Next, you will be able to choose a password to encrypt your wallet. This password will help protect your bitcoins if someone gains access to your computer or copies your wallet file. This password will NOT be required to restore the wallet from the backup seed, though.

After choosing the password, the main Electrum window will open. Your wallet is now ready for use. There are three tabs: History, Send and Receive. On the tab ‘History’ you’ll find all transactions from and to your wallet. From the tab ‘Send’, you can send bitcoin and determine the fee. From the tab ‘Receive’ you can request a bitcoin payment with a QR code.

To receive bitcoins, open the Receive tab. Receiving address is your Bitcoin address and it is something like your bank account number. Thus, if you are buying bitcoins by bank transfer or with your credit card or simply wish to receive bitcoins from a person, you should indicate this address for payment.

Upon receiving a payment, Electrum will display a notification. Althouh the risk of Bitcoin double-spends is extremely low, if you do not personally know the person sending you bitcoins, allow the Bitcoin network to confirm the transaction at least once (6 confirmations is often considered the most secure threshold).
